Once a charred surface is brushed and cleaned, stains can be applied as required. Recycled timbers often reveal colours and textures which are not easily replicated when using new timber. From dramatic depth and intensity of the original colour tones, to washed out or bleached tones and ‘spalting’ (water stains) – there are amazing possibilities. Stories of a previous life, of industrial and construction applications, add to the appeal of well-aged, old growth resources. Deeply brushed grain surfaces - even more dramatic after heavy charring, create a three-dimensional element to the surfaces and may define close, old growth grain or more bold, linear textures depending on the species of wood. This production is often labour intensive, with numerous steps required in the process to achieve uncommon or exclusive interior design options for the built environment. For the right project, these custom-made options with carefully selected resources, provide an opportunity to stand out from the crowd. |
